Sorby House, Sheffield
Main Contractor: Kier
Architect: Bond Bryan
Scope: Spider Glazing / Bolted Glass
Casu designed, supplied and installed this stunning scheme in Sheffield on behalf of Kier Construction.
The design at the time was a ground-breaking use of GluLam timber beams to act as structural support for the point fixed glass envelope, utilising tie rods to balance the beams out under tension.
The bolted glass then acts as an external leaf in a double skinned building envelope with the inner skin consisting of curtain walling and windows.
The scheme therefore benefits from an exceptional thermal performance.
Design interfaces were particularly challenging on this project and the movement of the timber and unknown qualities of it’s support values ensured that a high level of engineering and design due diligence was required in order to satisfy tolerance demands.
